PHOTOGRAPHS
OF PIPES & PIPERS TAKEN AT
MILTOWN MALBAY & TUBBERCURRY 1998-2000

The 1840 Coyne set donated to NPU by Fermanagh piper Tom Busby of New York. The set was renovated by pipemaker Geoff Wooff and presented to piper Nollaig MacCarthaigh at the end of the piping recital in Miltown Malbay's Community Hall during Willie Week on the 5th July, 2000. This photograph and the two following photographs were taken at the end of the evening.

The extended bass regulator with the F-sharp key was not on the set at this time.

A photograph of the 1840 Coyne set as encountered by pipermaker Craig Fischer during a visit to NPU. Craig found the pipes lying on a shelf in a cardboard box at NPU and took detailed measurements of the set and discussed with NPU the idea of renovating the set so they could be presented to a piper and played.

A wonderful set of pipes made by Denis Harrington. Renovated and owned by Geoff Wooff. Photographed after Geoff Wooff's afternoon recital at The Mill, on Ballard Road, Miltown Malbay. Geoff was one of the five master pipers who gave a half hour recital on the pipes. Gay McKeon, Peter Laban, Jimmy O'Brien Moran, Mick O'Brien were the other four pipers. Sean McKeon also played some tunes together with his father, Gay.

A set of pipes by pipemaker Johnny Burke. These are a copy of the Taylor set in the National museum, Dublin. Owned by piper Joe Doyle. Joe kindly allowed me to take photographs of this magnificent set on Friday the 7th of July, 2000 at Miltown. I only had 3 shots left in the camera, and photographed the set in the house where Joe was teaching his class. I was on my way up Ballard Road to Tom Clarke's class, after the morning break, when Joe standing at the front door taking the air called me in.

Michael Falsy playing his Crowley set with a Leo Rowsome chanter at the Sunday afternoon session in the Central Hotel in Miltown Malbay, at the beginning of Willie Week July, 1999.

Pat Mitchell playing during at the piping class I was in at Miltown in 1999. Pat's playing his Willie Rowsome set with chanter by Matt Kiernan of Dublin. I found Pat's class to be hard work, but very inspiring and entertaining. Waterford piper Tommy Kearney told me "Pat really knows what he's talking about". and it's true.

Mhairead Ni Ghrada playing at the piping recital during Willie Week 1999. Mhairead's playing a set by Geoff Wooff in pitched in Bb, I believe. Mhairead's playing is so musical. she has a great laid back style of piping. Mhairead has started the Limerick Pipers Club with Mickey Dunn as patron. This photo doesn't do her justice I'm afraid, but it's the only one I have.

Mick Coyne of Ennis taught two master piping classes in regard to solo performing at Miltown in 1999. Very inspiring and entertaining. Watching Mick, Carlos? from Argentina.

Keith Powell from the Isle of Anglesy playing a set he made, together with a friend playing a Chris Wilkes flute during an afternoon session at Tubbercurry, 1999.

Lucy D. of Cambridge playing a Dave Williams D set outside the Social Center on Ballard Road. Lucy is a fine piper and also a fine fiddler I've been told.

Lorenzo Morales, a Spanish piper living in Galway playing a Cillian O'Briain set, together with a French girl on flute in Brennan's at Tubbercurry 1999. Lorenzo has a CD out called "Tales of the travelling pipers"
